‘The Infernal Devices’ Series – Cassandra Clare

This series has three books, but is part of the larger ‘Shadowhunter Chronicles‘ which also includes the ‘The Last Hours‘ series, the ‘Mortal Instruments‘ series, as well as many others. (Links to learn more about these books are below). This series is set over a hundred years before the main ‘Mortal Instruments‘ series.

The three books in this series are ‘Clockwork Angel‘, ‘Clockwork Prince‘, and ‘Clockwork Princess‘.

A brief summary of Book 1… (‘Clockwork Angel‘)

London, 1878.
When Tessa Gray arrives in England looking for her brother, she is forced to descend into the dark, supernatural underworld of the country’s capital. Soon, she discovers that the only people she can trust are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters. Together, they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organisation of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. The Club, using their magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, want to rule the British Empire. Only Tessa and her allies can stop them…

To describe these books and why they were amazing reads, would be to spoil their events for a potential reader. So, I will leave the descriptions simple and spoiler free.

My copies of the ‘Infernal Devices’ series

Before I read this series, I had already read and loved the ‘Mortal Instruments‘ series. As this series is set so long before the other one, there was a whole new cast of characters, but some immortal characters appear in both this series and the ‘Mortal Instruments‘ (see https://kittyredreads.wordpress.com/2025/06/26/the-mortal-instruments-series-cassandra-clare/ for what I thought). I really enjoyed reading more of the world Cassandra Clare has created. I would definitely recommend these books to anyone who loves the previous series, adventure, and lore.

“You are not the last dream of my soul.
You are the first dream, the only dream I ever was unable to stop myself from dreaming. You are the first dream of my soul, and from that dream I hope will come all other dreams, a lifetime’s worth.”
― Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Prince
